Join SVMoA and Merlin's Magic Lantern for a screening of The 100 Years Show AND Time and Other Materials. The 100 Years Show is a documentary featuring Carmen Herrera, one of the oldest working artists in 2014, when this film was made. She had been painting since her youth in Cuba, but it was only in the last few years—when she was in her nineties-- that she found recognition. London’s The Observer called Carmen the “discovery of the decade,” and her work is now acknowledged as a precursor to many modernist styles—minimalism, geometric and modernist abstraction, and concrete painting. The 100 Years Show demonstrates the power of artistic vision to sustain itself. Directed Film Length: 30 minutes.
Time and Other Materials is a captivating exploration into the minds and hearts of five accomplished artists. Each with their unique perspective and medium - be it animation, ceramics, installation art, or large-scale sculpture - they unveil their inner worlds through a series of intimate studio sessions. This revealing documentary delves into their collective need to create and connect, not only with each other but with the broader world and beyond. Emphasizing themes such as discovery, mystery, femininity, and the vision of a better future, the film illustrates what it truly means to live a life devoted to creativity. Through five individual chapters filled with personal reflections and artistic processes, the documentary highlights the profound significance of art for both its creators and audience. Produced and directed by Amie Knox and Chad Herschberger. Film length: 60 minutes.
